Memorial tree for 'gentle soul' stolen from Kidderminster park

THE THEFT of a cherry tree planted in memory of a ‘gentle soul’ and reports of ‘animal cruelty to the ducks’ are among the issues that are ‘undoing the good work’ of volunteers at a Kidderminster park.

A newly planted cherry tree, which was added to Springfield Park in memory of local resident Ian Davies, was taken earlier this month.

Ian, who passed away before Christmas, loved to walk his many dogs in Springfield Park.

A fundraiser for the tree was set up on GoFundMe and raised £240.

Joanne Knight, who started the fundraiser, described him as a gentle soul and a good friend.

A spokesperson for Wyre Forest District Council said: “We were saddened to read that the cherry blossom tree planted in memory of Ian has been taken from Springfield Park.

“We know how much this tree means to Ian’s family, friends, and everyone in the community who came together to plant it.

“The matter has been reported to West Mercia Police, and we’ll be supporting their inquiries.

“We’re also committed to replacing the tree during the next planting season, so that Ian’s memory can continue to be honoured in the park where it belongs.”

The secretary of the Friends of Springfield Park, Lynn Darlington, has also claimed there has been an increase in animal cruelty to the ducks in the park.

She said it was very sad that there are park users intent on undoing the good work volunteers try to do to improve the park.

Other people on the Friends of Springfield Park Facebook page have claimed that the Perspex on the fishing notice board at the park was smashed.

An email by Lynn to West Mercia Police, seen by the Standard, said: “We are having an increase in vandalism to property and animal cruelty to the ducks in the park and on Waterside Grange.

“I’m hoping you could increase your presence in the area late afternoon and evening to help curb the problems.”

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “The local safer neighbourhood team have increased their patrols around the Springfield Park area following reports of antisocial behaviour.

“Officers will also be increasing their presence around the canals in Wyre Forest when possible.”

Email [email protected] if you witness any form of antisocial behaviour around the park or other areas.
