CHILDREN from Little Trinity Nursery in Kidderminster have had learning brought to life by taking part in a spring duckling and chick hatching project.
The hands-on spring life experience has given youngsters the opportunity to observe the life-cycle of birds – from egg to hatchling, using specially designed incubators within the nursery.
To ensure every child could fully engage with the experience, the ducks and chicks were cared for in separate rooms, allowing all children to spend time observing and learning about both.

Throughout the project, children watch the eggs develop, hatch and take their first steps, sparking curiosity and excitement as learning unfolded in real time.
Nursery manager, Gaynor Carter, said: “Seeing life begin first-hand is a powerful learning experience.
“It helps children understand the natural world in a meaningful way and creates memories that support learning long after the project ends.”

The activity also strongly supports the Early Years Foundation Stage, helping children learn about living things, growth and change.
Through daily observations and discussions, they build understanding, develop empathy for animals and learn the importance of caring for living beings.

Gaynor added: “This is a fantastic project that encourages communication, questioning and shared learning with children eagerly talking about what they can see and asking thoughtful questions.
“Simple responsibilities, supported by our staff, help reinforce respect and responsibility.
“Animal welfare is central to the project.
“The ducklings and chicks stay at the nursery for a short period before being collected and returned to a specialist breeder, ensuring they continue to grow in a safe and appropriate environment.”
