Heart of Worcestershire College launches new Cyber Security course

HEART of Worcestershire College (HoW College) has launched a new course to help young people learn more about security online.

Available to anyone aged 19 years and over, the course – Cyber Security Accredited Level 1 qualification’ – is largely available for free or at reduced cost depending on eligibility.

Thanks to funding from SkillsBoost Worcestershire businesses can benefit from a reduced fee.

Individuals or businesses interested in attending the course should register to express their interest and find out more.

Available during the week of December 2 to 6, the course can be taken online or in person at HOW College’s Worcester campus  (Monday December 2 until Tuesday December 3) or at its Redditch campus (Wednesday December 4 until Thursday December 5).

Attendees of the course will be awarded a ‘Level 1 Award in Cyber Security’ and can build knowledge of understanding and protecting  against Cybercrime and the law surrounding it.

This course comes as research undertaken by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, found that half of businesses and around a third of charities report having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months.

It also found a high proportion of UK businesses continue to lack staff with the technical skills, incident response skills and governance skills needed to manage their cyber security.

Neil Gardiner, curriculum, resource and quality lead, at HoW College, said: “We aim to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing field of information security, as technology continues to shape industries and daily life.

“This new course aims to educate and empower people with the essential skills to combat cyber threats and protect digital infrastructure.”
