QUEEN Elizabeth II Jubilee Gardens in Bewdley have received the Green Flag award, recognising it among the best green spaces in the country, writes Charlotte Hall.
Wyre Forest District Council is celebrating the gardens winning internationally recognised accolade.
This year, the Green Flag Award scheme marks its 30th anniversary.
In total, just 2,391 sites across the UK have achieved Green Flag status this year.
The award was give to Jubilee Gardens as it met the criteria of hard work, care and overall dedication to maintaining the open space to a high standard for visitors and residents to enjoy.
The gardens, located just behind Bewdley Museum, boast ornamental fishponds, an orchard, a green theatre and an inclusive play area.
The park also is enclosed by old listed walls which, the council said, added to its character and heritage setting.
Coun Nathan Desmond, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet Member for Operational Services, said it was fantastic to see the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Gardens – a valued green space in the heart of Bewdley – recognised.
“This achievement reflects the dedication of everyone involved in caring for the gardens and maintaining them to such a high standard.
“This includes the volunteers whose hard work in the gardens has been recognised by this award.
“We are extremely grateful for their ongoing support and thank them for all their hard work.
“Quality parks and open spaces play an important role in supporting wellbeing and we are proud to provide places that residents and visitors can enjoy throughout the year.”
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Manager congratulated everyone involved in maintaining the Jubilee Gardens and said: “With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury, it’s a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people’s quality of life.
“Wyre Forest District Council has shown what can be achieved when parks are properly supported and managed.
“As we celebrate 30 years of the Green Flag Award, we want every community to have access to green spaces like this that are safe, welcoming and maintained to a high standard.”
The Green Flag scheme is managed by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. It is under the contract from Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
It sets the benchmark standard for managing green spaces across the UK and around the World.
