Kidderminster's male choir to celebrate 120th anniversary with concert

Holly Clement 9th Dec, 2024

KIDDERMINSTER Male Choir will celebrate its 120th anniversary with a festive grand finale in Stourport.

The Men in Red are set to perform their Christmas concert, packed with festive favourites, at the Severns Club, Lickhill Road, on Sunday December 15, at 7.30pm.

All year the group have been celebrating the anniversary with a special project designed to introduce men who have never sung in public before to join the group.

Around 40 new singers joined the Wyre Men Sing Project Choir, which culminated in a sell out concert at St George’s Church in June and raised £10,200 for the Kidderminster and Worcestershire Prostate Cancer Support Group.

The choir also helped organise Singin’ on the Train with Severn Valley Railway, which brought together six choirs from as far away as Torbay and Yorkshire to join the Men in Red for a day of music.

John Parkinson, choir member and communications manager, said: “It was such an enjoyable day of singing and raising funds for our wonderful heritage railway and so successful that we are already planning a similar event for next August.”

Choir members joined forces with Welsh-born singing star Aled Jones in concert at the iconic Birmingham Town Hall for a celebration of their milestone anniversary in September.

Mr Parkinson added: “With a packed programme and so many highlights throughout the year, the choir is going from strength to strength and is enjoying a marked uptake in membership.

“New members are always welcome. The ability to read music is not required, just a desire to sing, make music and enjoy the company of likeminded souls.”

Rehearsals take place every Thursday at St Mary’s Church, Churchfields, Kidderminster from 7.30pm.
