£1,750 funding boost sees Bewdley's War Memorial restored to its former glory

Tristan Harris 11th Apr, 2025

BEWDLEY’S war memorial is benefiting from £1,750 worth of funding so repairs and conservation work can be carried out to the monument.

The cash is a 2024/25 award from the Grants for War Memorial scheme, which is supported by Historic England.

The work carried out has included the cleaning of the stone, careful removal of any defective and loose mortar and re-pointing with an appropriate lime mortar.

Work to replace the stone panel with a newly carved hand cut lower section inscribed ‘Pro Patria’ has also been undertaken.

Worcestershire County Council Divisional funds have helped with the contribution towards the repair and conservation of the magnificent War Memorial.

It comes at a poignant time as Bewdley, the county and country gets ready to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The Mayor of Bewdley, Coun Ian Latimer JP, said:  “Bewdley Town Council is proud to be associated with the repair and conservation of the war memorial, which now shines in splendour in the town centre.”

The project involved a partnership between Bewdley Town Council, Worcestershire County Council and contractor Steve Allard and Son.

Frances Moreton, director of the War Memorials Trust, said: “War memorials remind us all of the millions of lives ended, or impacted, by conflict.

“Preserving them not only ensures we continue to commemorate them but also shows future generations the consequences of war and encourages them to avoid such suffering. ”

She added the War Memorials Trust was delighted to award this project a grant.

“The charity hopes the work will help ensure its future as a focal point for commemoration.”

And she urged anyone concerned about other war memorials they feel might need help should contact the charity, along with anyone who wants to donate to help the trust preserve the country’s war memorial heritage for many years to come.
