BEWDLEY CC suffered their first defeat of the season against Burghill, Tillington and Weobley.

The league leaders slipped to a four-wicket defeat after Burghill restricted Bewdley to 201-8 from their 50 overs at the PAF Cricket Ground.

And a fine knock from Burghill’s Barney Morgan inspired the home side to victory with four wickets in-hand and 13 overs to spare.

Despite the defeat, Bewdley remain top of the Worcestershire County League Division One table.

Bewdley won the toss and elected to bat only to see opener Austin Ball (1) run out in the fourth over.

And Bewdley’s other opener Nick Wilkinson (31) was also the victim of a run out after Jamie Boyle (31) fell to the bowling of Afaq Khalid (2-46).

Bewdley slumped to 86-5 after Morgan (3-50) claimed the wickets of Damon Gariff (8) and Michael Harris (0) in consecutive balls.

Louis Spencer (12) and Simon Mauger (14) took Bewdley past the 100-run mark before the away side’s tail order gave the visitors a chance of victory.

Jack Mills (41 not out) and Sam Wilson (34 not out), the latter’s knock coming from just 19 deliveries, saw Bewdley close on 201-8.

However, Bewdley made the perfect start with the ball as Michael Hayes (3-62) and Wilson (2-44) ripped through Burghill’s top order.

Hayes accounted for Jake Hutson (14) before Wilson took the wickets of Tyler Garrard (1) and Rhodri Jones (9) in the following over.

And Hayes then claimed the scalps of Sabil Sarmad (8) and Theodore Darke (4) to leave Burghill in trouble on 55-5 in the 10th over.

However, a 110-run sixth-wicket stand between Morgan (93 not out) and Jake Kinderman (41) saw Burghill mount a superb recovery.

Morgan and Archie Stevenson (11 not out) eventually guided Burghill to a four-wicket victory.

Bewdley are next in action against Netherton on Saturday, June 21 with the game to start at 12.30pm at Highbridge Road.
