Summer Reading Challenge set to get underway in Worcestershire

Kidderminster Editorial 20th Jul, 2025

WORCESTERSHIRE libraries has launched its Summer Reading Challenge, writes Hannah Taylor.

The Reading Agency has developed the exciting challenge, which is aimed at children aged between four and 11 and will run throughout the summer holidays until September 13, 2025.

The challenge, available at all libraries across the county, enhances children’s imagination as they experience magic through entertaining stories and meet new characters – all for free.

Children are tasked with reading six books and this year’s scheme has a ‘Story Garden’ theme, which allows them to make connections between powerful storytelling and nature whilst also keeping their mind active during the summer break.

Coun Ian Cresswell, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Communities, said: “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to keep children motivated to read during the holidays, which will help maintain their reading skills and confidence ahead of the new school year.”

He urged all parents to visit their local library with their children and discover what it had to offer the whole family this summer.

To participate, children can sign up at their local library and choose the books they want to read. Library staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist the children and learn more about what they have read in the past.

Rewards and incentives are included in this challenge to encourage the children to actively participate – for example this year those who have read four books are given free admission for one child and one adult for National Trust Croome and each child which completes the challenge receives a medal and a certificate.

Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, added: “The Summer Reading Challenge continues to be a bright light in what has recently been an uncertain picture of children’s reading.

“Story Garden will create magical spaces where children can explore and be curious, combining the joy of reading with the wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature.”

From storytimes to a range of free events and activities, Worcestershire’s libraries offer welcoming spaces to support children learning, boosting confidence and even offering free family resources.
