COLUMN - Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau urging people to get their boilers checked for winter

Kidderminster Editorial 28th Jul, 2025

Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) writes for the Standard.

WHEN the sun is shining and temperatures soar, it is easy to forget about the colder months ahead, but summer is actually the perfect time to prepare your home for winter, especially when it comes to your heating system.

Regular maintenance now can help avoid unexpected breakdowns when you need heating the most.

Getting your boiler or heating system serviced during the warmer months can mean shorter waiting times for appointments and can also reduce the risk of being left without heat in the depths of winter. It can also improve efficiency, saving you money on your energy bills when the time comes to switch the heating back on.

We understand people may be concerned about the cost of servicing or upgrading their heating systems, but there is help available. The Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme is designed to support low-income and vulnerable households in improving their home’s energy efficiency. Under ECO, energy companies could help fund improvements, such as insulation, boiler repairs, boiler replacements or other upgrades to your heating system.

You may qualify for the ECO scheme if you are on certain benefits, have a low income and live in a home with a poor energy efficiency rating. It is worth checking if you or someone you know might be eligible, so any work can be completed before the cold weather sets in.

Please visit the Government website gov.uk/energy-company-obligation to find out more information on the scheme and if you could be eligible.

Citizens Advice can help you understand what support is available and guide you through applying for schemes like ECO. We can also advise on what could help with energy bills over winter.

Don’t wait until it’s freezing to think about heating.

A little planning now can make a big difference later.
