FOOTBALL - Adam Murray admits Kidderminster Harriers are 'still finding identity' after Oxford draw

ADAM Murray admits Kidderminster Harriers are still finding their identity following a 1-1 draw with Oxford City in midweek.

A late goal from Alex Penny saw Harriers maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign after Jack Bearne put the visitors ahead at Aggborough.

And Murray wants his players to play with more freedom after feeling his side took the safe option too many times against Oxford.

Murray said: “We’re still unbeaten but I’m just frustrated because I know how good this team is and how good these players are and how much there is to come.

“Some of the boys are still finding our identity and still understanding what I expect from them and how I expect us to play.

“We played way too safe and way too many square passes. We end up giving away a really poor goal after having 70 per cent possession.

“That was the blueprint of what’s going to happen at Aggborough all season. We have to understand that and be better at causing teams more problems.

“When we get into the final third, there’s a few boys playing with a little bit of fear because they look like they’re caged up.

“There’s an awful lot of quality in this group but they’ve just got to free themselves up a bit. At the moment it’s: ‘I don’t want to make a mistake. I want to be safe.’

“That’s not my way of playing. For us to move to the next level we just need certain things to click and once we do that I’ve got no doubts we’re going to have a successful season.

“We want more but we want it quicker. We didn’t create enough and didn’t put them under enough stress and that’s the bit as a team we have to get better at.”

The Reds fell behind on 36 minutes when Bearne ran on to a great pass and fired home.

However, Harriers improved after the break and drew level nine minutes from time when Penny blasted home from a corner.

Kidderminster are next in action against AFC Fylde on Saturday, August 23 with kick-off 3pm at Mill Farm.
