STUDENTS at a school in Alvechurch were treated to a visit from a local paramedic who taught them emergency first aid skills as part of a learning workshop.

Year Six learners from Alvechurch C of E Middle School took part in the CPR training as a continuation of their science studies on the human body.

During the science lessons, questions were asked about first aid and heart health so head of key stage two science and PE teacher, Dan Pattison, thought it would be worth delving into the topic more.

Dan’s hope was to raise awareness of the topic among students and share the importance of first aid in helping a person’s chances of survival in events such as cardiac arrests.

The practical workshop was delivered by Andy Thurgood, an emergency nurse and paramedic, who taught the students how to conduct CPR and place someone in the recovery position.

Dan told the Standard: “With lots of cardiac arrests happening in the news of sport, it felt like a great learning opportunity to merge science with first aid.

“We would like to pass on our thanks to Andy for delivering such an engaging session.”
