Avoncroft Museum volunteer scoops national accolade for decades long contributions

Sonny Rackham 7th Jun, 2025

A LONG-STANDING Avoncroft Museum volunteer has received a national honour for his dedication to voluntary service over the last 35 years.

Andew Hurley, who was crowned Unsung Hero in Visit Worcestershire’s Tourism Awards in March, received a Bronze award in the national equivalent of the honour.

The stalwart volunteer was bestowed his honour at the Visit England Awards of Excellence held at Brighton Dome Corn Exchange on Wednesday (June 4).

The award is a testament to Andrew’s dedication to preserving the national collection of telephone kiosks – one of the most extensive in the country.

Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for business and skills at Worcestershire County Council, said: “I’m delighted to see Worcestershire’s tourism sector recognised on the national stage.”

Andrew received his accolade alongside a fellow Worcesteshire based national award recipient. Abbots Grange Manor House, in Broadway, scooped the silver award in the bed and breakfast and guest house category of the year.

To earn a spot in the national award finals, Abbots Grange Manor House was crowned the small serviced accommodation of the year at Visit Worcestershire’s Tourism Awards in March.

Coun Amos added: “Congratulations to Abbots Grange Manor House and Andrew Hurley – their continued success at both regional and national levels is a fantastic achievement and a true testament to the quality of experiences Worcestershire offers. Their recognition shines a spotlight on the county’s rich appeal and reinforces our growing reputation as a top destination for visitors.”

Applications are now open for the next Visit Worcestershire Tourism Awards, which offer the chance for local businesses and individuals to gain recognition at both regional and national levels.

The deadline for entries has been extended to Monday, June 23.
