RESIDENTS across Worcestershire are being urged to waste less food and save money in the process in 2025 as part of a drive organised by the county council.
The advice came as the BBC Hereford and Worcester’s Cost of Living Roadshow took place at the Malvern Link Community Fridge on Monday.
Worcestershire County Council’s #FoodSavvy campaign took centre stage, providing practical tips and advice to residents in light of new findings from WRAP (Waste Resources Action Plan).
According to WRAP, the average family of four is throwing away a staggering £1,000 worth of perfectly edible food each year.
Coun Emma Stokes, Worcestershire County Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for the environment, said: “The increase in the cost of living has put a significant pressure on households across Worcestershire.
“Through initiatives like the #FoodSavvy campaign and community fridges, we’re not only helping residents save money but also reducing food waste, which benefits the environment. It’s a win-win for our communities.”
The #FoodSavvy campaign emphasises simple but effective actions to combat food waste and save money.
As part of the drive, residents are encouraged to plan meals in advance, ‘shop smart’ by creating a shopping list and buying only what they need for meals, store food effectively to maximise its shelf life and use all purchased food, including by transforming leftovers into new meals.
The roadshow also highlighted the county’s growing network of community fridges.
Unlike food banks, which require a referral, community fridges are open to everyone and provide access to fresh produce donated by supermarkets that is close to its ‘use by’ date. Worcestershire’s community fridges are already making a difference, and the scheme is expected to expand further
