County's Summer Reading Challenge returns for 2025

Sonny Rackham 15th Jul, 2025

WORCESTERSHIRE’S Summer Reading Challenge is back for 2025 and this year’s theme is all about enjoying nature.

The scheme is the ‘perfect’ way for parents to get their children reading over the school holidays.

Youngsters can take part in the challenge at all Worcestershire libraries between Saturday, July 5 and September 13.

Developed by The Reading Agency and brought to life by local libraries, it aims to keep young minds active and inspired during the summer break.

This year’s theme is Story Garden, adventures in nature and the great outdoors. Young readers can tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature.

The challenge is free for children between the ages of four and 11. To take part, children can sign up at their local library and choose the books they want to read.

There are rewards and incentives along the way to encourage children to read. This year if you read four books you get free admission for one child and one adult for National Trust Croome.

Every child who completes the challenge, by reading six library books, receives a medal and certificate.

Libraries also have activities for children to enjoy during the summer holidays. Ask at your local library or look at library events page.

The reading challenge aims to keep young minds active and prevent literature loss which many children can experience over the six weeks.

Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, added: “The Summer Reading Challenge continues to be a bright light in what has recently been an uncertain picture of children’s reading.

“Story Garden will create magical spaces where children can explore and be curious, combining the joy of reading with the wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature.

“We are particularly excited to be working with Dapo Adeola, whose illustrations will bring these adventures to life.”
