Fire and safety upgrades set to start at Redditch's Alexandra Hospital

FIRE and safety upgrades to Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital are set to get under way, thanks to a £3million investment.

The Alex is among more than 400 NHS sites nationally benefiting from a £750million maintenance package designed to tackle long-term issues, including leaky pipes, poor ventilation and faulty electrics.

Alongside this, a further £470million is being directed to 656 schools and sixth forms across the country, ensuring pupils learn in warm, safe and modern classrooms.

This is part of the Government’s Plan for Change – a national programme to deliver better services and rebuild the foundations of Britain after years of neglect.

The £3million investment in Redditch will fund essential fire safety works at the Alex, making the site safer for patients, visitors and NHS staff.

These upgrades will be delivered during the 2025/26 financial year, with some projects due to begin this summer.

Redditch MP Chris Bloore said: “After years of under-investment and neglect, patients and NHS staff at the Alex are finally getting the safer, modern environment they deserve.

“Our local hospital has been forced to do more with less for too long – but this investment will help prevent avoidable disruptions and support better care.

“It’s another sign this Government is serious about fixing what’s broken.

“We’re already delivering more appointments and modern GP surgeries – and now we’re making the hospitals and schools our families rely on safer and fit for the future.

“There’s lots more to do, but this is a crucial step forward.”

This funding comes alongside Labour’s efforts to modernise more than 1,000 GP surgeries and expand NHS capacity – all aimed at delivering high-quality, reliable public services for the people of Redditch.

Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting MP, said: “A decade and a half of under-investment left hospitals crumbling, with burst pipes flooding emergency departments and outdated facilities letting down patients and staff alike.

“We are on a mission to rebuild our NHS through investment and modernisation.

“Through our Plan for Change, we’ll make our health system fit for the future.”
