A WARNING to vape users has been issued by Worcestershire’s fire service ahead of the UK’s scheduled ban of single use vapes.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) is urging people who vape to take extra care when charging their devices as the UK prepares to ban the sale and supply of disposable vapes on June 1.
The ban on vapes may mean more users switch to rechargeable devices and the service is highlighting the increased fire risks associated with charging lithium-ion batteries.
Emma Roberts, Head of Prevention at HWFRS, said: “Between January 2020 and December 2024, 40 accidental fires were caused by lithium-ion batteries (in Herefordshire and Worcestershire).
“This highlights the importance of charging batteries in a safe way. It is crucial to use the battery and charger that came with your vape and if you need a replacement, always buy from a reputable source.”
Tips to stay safe when charging vapes include never leaving e-cigarettes unattended for long periods whilst on charge, purchasing from reputabloe sources, check the devices CE certification, follow the manufacturers instructions, never charge a device which is damaged, check your battery has overheat protection, do not charge your device for too long, and do not use or charge a vape if it is wet.
