Firefighters raise more funds on Brecon Beacons challenge in memory of colleague Stu Crebbin

Sonny Rackham 26th Jun, 2025

AN ANNUAL fundraising event held in tribute to late Bromsgrove firefighter Stu Crebbin has raised even more funds for charity.

Stu’s Phoenix Challenge sees his former colleagues complete the Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks Traverse (East to West) which he took on himself in 2020.

The event, which must be completed in 24 hours, remembers Stu who was based in Bromsgrove with Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service. He died in March 2021, aged 46, after a 12-month battle with cancer.

Despite having intense chemotherapy and immunotherapy sessions in the lead-up, Stu completed most of the challenge with his Phoenix Challenge Team.

This year the team retraced the steps of the original route walked by Stu. Despite rain and fog adding to the complexity of the challenge, spirts remained high and the group completed a 38-mile route in 19 hours.

But now there’s a new challenge ahead. “In line with Stu’s vision of fundraising inclusivity, the Phoenix Challenge continually adapts,” said Firefighter Spencer Jones, who heads up the fundraising activity.

“The next event this year is a Church Tower Abseil and full details will follow soon.

“To date we’ve raised £25,700; our target is to reach £30,000 following the tower abseil in August.”

The most recent Phoenix Challenge has raised over £650 for the Fire Fighters Charity. Visit https://www.justgiving.com/page/spencer-jones-11 to donate.
