AFTER two years of work Bewdley Bridge re-opened last Friday for two way traffic.
It comes after the Environment Agency revealed that the multi-million scheme to protect the town from flooding was nearing completion.
A spokesperson said: “Our contractors have been working hard to enable the Kidderminster Road and Bewdley Bridge to open to two-way traffic.”
The final piece in the jigsaw was the dry weather which enabled workers to lay specialist coloured tar, enabling the bridge to re-open later that day.
Stourport Road will remain closed into September, with the formal opening of the flood scheme currently being planned for early September.
Glass panelling has been installed along the flood wall on the banks of the River Severn, bring the wall up to its full height.
Bewdley is currently undergoing a £6million flood defence project, specifically focused on the Beales Corner area of the town.
It includes a new flood wall with glass panels, demountable barriers, and flood gates.
The Environment Agency has put in place defences which are as passive as possible, which means they can function without a lot of work to put them up during flood alerts.
This is to guardd against the danger of flash flooding caused by short intense bursts of rainfall which can quickly overwhelm river banks.
