A BEWDLEY author who specialises in creating unusual titles for his books has launched his second one – ‘How to Strangle a Jelly’.
Les King has penned his memoir about a lifetime of experiences spent in talking and communicating with people from all walks of life, in a variety of situations across several careers.
In his lifetime, Les has been a police officer, probation officer, university lecturer and a union representative.
The book portrays, examples of raw and unadulterated communications at the sharp end of some difficult and volatile situations.
These situations have mostly been to find things out – to cross-examine, to console, to teach, to persuade, to explain, to counsel, to entertain, to prevent people doing something really dramatic like killing themselves and even to save his own skin in volatile incidents.
The book is billed as being ‘funny, sad, but it is never boring’.
His first book
Les published his first book, ‘Cornflakes with Whisky’ as an autobiography of 30 years of policing across the West Mercia areas of Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire.
Similarly to ‘Strangle a Jelly’, it has a creative title – the chosen names for Les’ books are explained and become apparent when the subjects and scenarios unfold.
Les is also working on a third book about his second career as a probation officer and the transition from a lifetime of ‘nicking to nurturing’.
He said: “I started writing when I took semi-retirement, mainly to get out of gardening and DIY at home.
“I knew everyone has one book in them about their life and career but I didn’t anticipate I could produce three.
“I find writing very cathartic and I can recall my experiences as if they happened yesterday.
“I am particularly proud of my latest book ‘How to Strangle a Jelly’ because it is about communicating with people, sometimes in difficult situations which everyone can relate to.”
