A TENACIOUS trekker is walking 92 miles to raise funds for the Kidderminster-based Forest Dog Rescue (FDR) which gave her four-legged friend a second chance at life.
Georgina Cockerill got her dog Freddie from the rescue centre after he was found as a stray and neglected.
Being aware of the ‘brilliant job’ FDR does – rescuing more than 200 dogs a year and after reading about the charity’s need for funding in the Standard, she decided to get out her walking boots and take on the Shakespeare Avon Way from Naseby to Tewkesbury.
She began her long walk on Saturday (July 5) and set herself a target of £1,000 – she is currently up to £600.
Georgina told the Standard: “Last year I adopted my little dog Freddie from FDR and he brings great joy and daily happiness to my life. He is a fantastic rescue dog.
“Sadly, the long distance walk would be a bit too much for his little legs, so he will have his usual walks with my husband while I do the long one to raise funds for FDR.
“I want to help Forest Dog Rescue secure its future to continue its work saving dogs. Financially times are tough right now for them.
“Please help me reach, and ideally smash, my target.
“Please sponsor me in my walk to help raise these much-needed funds – no matter how much or little you can give.
“Truly, every pound counts towards helping FDR rescue and save more dogs.
“There are so many dog-lovers locally and nationally but without charities, such as the Forest Dog Rescue, these pets would not get the second lease of life they all deserve.”
By the end of it, although the Shakespeare Avon Way is 92 miles, Georgina will have walked closer to 110 miles because of diversions due to overgrown foliage and other issues.
She is hoping to finish her walk by Saturday, July 12.
