ONE of the candidates standing in the Wyre Forest seats in the Worcestershire County Council elections was believed to be one of the youngest in the country.

Oskar Hyams, who was representing the Green Party in St George’s, only turned 18 in March.

And John Davies, the co-ordinator of the Wyre Forest Green Party, predicts big things for the prodigy, including one day becoming an MP.

Oskar said: “I have been really interested in politics since the Brexit Referendum. But, when I told people I was standing in this election, a lot of them immediately said: ‘why would you want to do that?’”

He said a lot of people had expressed the view that ‘politics was boring’.

“But, politics have an impact on every impact of everyone’s daily life,” he added. “We need more people to take an interest in politics and especially more young people.

“I’m studying politics and there are only five of us in the class which shows there is just not enough young people interested in politics.”

And Oskar stressed it was important people voted in elections.

“During the campaign, I was saying to people: ‘I don’t mind which way you vote, but the important thing is you get out and vote for someone you believe in’,” he explained.

In his first election, Oskar finished sixth in his division but the determined campaigner is confident this is just the start of what will be a long-term political journey.
