A HOST of events and activities took place across Stourport last Thursday to mark VE Day 80
‘A shared moment of celebration’ was held to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

The events not only paid tribute to those who fought for freedom but also offered a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity which has defined the country since then.

The day began with the raising of the ‘Flag of Peace’ and the reading of the proclamation for peace at the War Memorial Gardens. Then in the afternoon, there was food and drink from a number of vendors on offer in the park.

People joined local historian and expert Geoff Shaw in Stourport Community Centre, for a free talk on the town’s contribution to VE Day and its role in the Second World War.

In the evening, the bell-ringers of the Parish Church of St Bartholomew (Areley Kings) joined in with ‘Together We Chime – Let the Nation’s Bells Ring Loud’. Entertainment included performances by The Swingettes and DJ Stretch which led up to the lighting of a VE Day 80 beacon.

The day concluded with the Stourport Carnival Queen lighting the ‘Lamp of Peace’.
