Kidderminster to host VJ Day 80 commemorations, including a special service and fun day

A SERVICE to commemorate VJ Day 80 and to remember those from the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment who have made the ultimate sacrifice will be held in Kidderminster.

The event, which is being run by the Mercian Volunteer Regiment and Kidderminster Royal British Legion, takes place at 6.30pm on August 15 in St Mary’s Church.

There will be a Remembrance service with standards on parade.

Afterwards, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment war memorial in St Mary’s Churchyard and a performance by Kidderminster Male Choir.

There will also, hopefully, be a beacon lit to mark the occasion and refreshments will be provided by Kidderminster Town Council afterwards.

Coun Kevin Gale, Wyre Forest District Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “I’m happy to be involved in what will be a poignant occasion to remember all those involved in the Victory in Japan.”

A VJ Day 80 Family Fun Day will take place at the St George’s Club in Kidderminster from midday on Saturday, August 15.

The event will feature live music, a tombola, stalls, a barbecue, a bar and games.

Tickets for the event will be £5 per person, payable on the door.

People wanting stalls at the event should email: [email protected] – all pitches will be for a donation to Kidderminster Royal British Legion’s branch funds – also payable on the day.
