A KIDDERMINSTER theatre group has received the prestigious King’s Voluntary Service Award.

Wheely Different Theatre Company (WDTC) was delighted to be handed the award at a special ceremony in the Council Chamber at Wyre Forest House on Thursday.

The event was attended by members, registered volunteers and representatives of organisations which had supported WDTC over the 13 years since its launch.

The Mayors of Stourport and Bewdley, Councillors Fran Oborski, Nicky Gale, Kevin Gale, Nathan Desmond and Anna Coleman also attended to witness The Lord Lieutenant of Worcester, Beatrice Grant, present the award on behalf of HM King Charles III.

The accolade recognises the work of the group which, despite members’ disabilities, all work together to put on shows or events in the community plus.

WDTC also has a strong social programme designed to empower members and improve health and wellbeing.

One of just two recipients in Worcestershire

The group is one of two groups in Worcestershire and just 281 nationwide to receive what is equivalent of an MBE for organisations.

Hannah Carroll and Sarah Baker accepted the award on behalf of the membership and the group has dedicated the award to the memory of Janet Louise Shorthouse who sadly passed away recently.

Speaking about the award, company administrator and producer Elaine Kirby said: “We are so proud of all we have achieved so far – we could not have done it without the help of all our supporters and hope they will continue to help us further our work in the community.”

The group is currently touring care homes and supporting events for Alzhiemers UK and Parkinsons UK.
