Malvern golfers to swing big in aid of leading Worcestershire hospice

Sonny Rackham 10th May, 2025

A GROUP of golfers from a club in Malvern are set to hit the fairway this summer in aid of a leading local hospice.

Four members from The Worcestershire Golf Club, in Malvern, will challenge themselves to hit 72 holes in a single day to raise £10,000 to support St Richard’s Hospice.

The team, made up of Matt Pencocks, James Gath and Phil Schiaffino, also features 14-year-old junior member Luke Hall.

All four will take to the course on Sunday, June 29. Jon Lane, club captain at The Worcestershire Golf Club, said: “This challenge is not just about golf; it’s about making a difference to the lives of those who need it most.

“St Richard’s Hospice provides compassionate care to individuals with an illness that cannot be cured, ensuring they receive the support and dignity they deserve.

“We’ve chosen St Richard’s and another charity as the beneficiaries of a year of fundraising to October 2025 and are determined to raise as much as we can for two causes which are close to the heart of both myself and lady captain Ursula Pearson.”

St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity offering free, expert care for adults with an illness that cannot be cured, and support for their loved ones and carers.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,100 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

It will cost in the region of £12m to run the hospice this year, which includes patient care and all the necessary support services.

St Richard’s relies on voluntary support, including from donations, gifts in Wills, retail and events for the majority of its income with the remainder funded by the NHS.

Jodi Brandwood, Community Fundraiser for St Richard’s Hospice, said: “We’re so grateful to the captains for choosing us as one of their charities of the year and we’ll be cheering the team on.

“Funds raised will help us continue our free, specialist care to patients and the people important to them.”
