TWO INTERPRETATION boards on the site’s geology and history are now in place at Hartlebury Common.
The boards have been placed at the Wilden Top car park by Hartlebury Common Local Group (HCLG) which said it was delighted with the installations.
The latest boards complete a set of six which describe Hartlebury Common, its creation, its uses through the centuries and current status.
Members of the group have worked in partnership with Worcestershire County Council, with help from the Earth Heritage Trust and Bewdley Museum, to highlight the geological background and historical changes to the common.
The six boards illustrate the common’s management, its wildlife and the Heather Trail, with one board dedicated especially to bees and wasps, for which the common is nationally important. They were designed by morgancreative.carbonmade.com which is well known for its interpretation boards.
Mike Lomax, chair of the Hartlebury Common Local Group, said “We were keen as a group to get across that Hartlebury Common is more than just a place to walk the dog.
“It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a unique example of lowland heath, which is a fast-declining habitat across England as a whole.
“The design of the boards has involved a lot of hard work by our committee members, but we think the final results are well worth it.
“They will be of long standing benefit to locals and visitors alike.”
Mr Lomax explained Hartlebury Common was home to a wide range of plants, birds, butterflies and other insects that had disappeared from so many places.
“We hope the provision of the new boards show how the common has been formed and the history behind it, to heighten appreciation of this amazing site,” he added.
“How fortunate we are to have this wonderful place on our doorstep – one of the premier sites for nature in Worcestershire!”
Hartlebury Common Local Group was set up in 2006 by local residents keen to promote the common and ensure it thrives into the future as an important area of heathland.
The group undertakes regular conservation tasks on the common and holds monthly talks for members in the winter as well as organising walks during the summer months.
