PCC calls for support from new county chief in improving Worcestershire's road safety

A LETTER calling for Worcestershire County Council to support efforts to reduce harm on county roads has been penned by the region’s police and crime commissioner (PCC).

West Mercia PCC, John Campion, has written to the new leader of the council, Reform UK’s Joanne Monk, to ask for help in improving road safety across the region.

In his letter, the PCC congratulated Coun Monk on her appointment and said he wanted to use ‘this opportunity to highlight why, together, more can be done to address one of the biggest causes of harm’ locally.

He wrote: “Across Worcestershire County there is approximately 2,500 miles of roads, and only last year, there were 26 fatalities and 230 serious injuries.

“Behind every statistic there are victims, loved ones, and local communities who have had their lives changed forever. Too many people die or are seriously injured, and I believe more can be done to change this.

“Enforcement alone isn’t the answer, instead it requires a joined-up approach which also brings together education, engineering and community engagement.

“How we collaborate will determine how successful we are in delivering the change communities want to see, whilst reducing the harm caused on our roads.”

The PCC also recognised the significant responsibility Coun Monk is taking on and said he was looking forward to meeting and working with her.

He added: “I would also welcome an opportunity to meet with you, alongside partners, to discuss how we can better align our efforts around road safety as I am resolute in my commitment to play my part.”
