Plenty of remembering and reminiscing at the Stourport School and brass band reunions

Kidderminster Editorial 25th May, 2025 Updated: 26th May, 2025

THERE was plenty of long-awaited laughter and recalling cherished memories when former friends and partners of Stourport School and the brass band got together for reunions.

The first event was last Friday when school friends met up and, a day later, the first members of Stourport Secondary Modern School brass band got together at The Black Star in the town.

On the Saturday, 20 former original band members journeyed to meet up from across the world, including Australia, USA, Germany, Denmark, Cheshire, Cirencester, Lichfield, Kidderminster and, of course, Stourport, to catch up and reminisce.

The school brass band was started in 1962 by Dennis Taylor who led and developed the band for three years before moving away. It was then George Jackson took over the leadership.

In 1968 it became the Stourport Youth Band and then group grew and changed to become what is now known as Stourport-on-Severn Brass Band.

Acknowledging this, Dennis was a special guest of honour at the first band reunion in 2016 and was again invited to the 2019 reunion to celebrate Stourport-on-Severn Brass Band’s 50th anniversary.

Band members Rob Chell and Valda Parkinson (Townsend) were instrumental in making the event possible, enabling everyone to remain close and connected.
