'Reflecting on 2024 and looking forward to next year' - A Christmas Message from Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier

Kidderminster Editorial 24th Dec, 2024

AS WE approach the new year, I find myself reflecting on the whirlwind that was 2024.

This year has indeed been a political roller coaster.

This time last year in my Christmas message, I predicted the election would be in May, and I wasn’t far off – the July election certainly kept us all on our toes!

The summer’s general election brought significant changes, and I find myself in opposition for the first time in my political career. While I of course feel a sense of survivors’ guilt as many colleagues lost their seats, we must carry on.

As Winston Churchill wisely said, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

” I look forward to holding the government to account in my new shadow role in the Treasury and am grateful to my team’s support both in Westminster and in the constituency.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you most of all, my constituents, for your continued engagement.

Your letters and emails are invaluable, keeping me informed of your concerns and priorities.

A particular thank you to those who bravely shared their views on Assisted Dying – your letters on this topic have been deeply moving.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m aware that there will be some who are apprehensive, especially our farmers.

The impact of Labour’s policies in just a few months is very unsettling and will have lasting economic damage.

I have raised my concerns with the Chancellor in writing, and encourage you to continue to share yours with me.

Locally, I’ll be pressing on with infrastructure projects and regeneration for our three towns and with my rogue builders campaign. I’m also aware of the challenges facing our pensioners, particularly with the cold weather continuing. I’ll be working to ensure their voices are heard.

As we enter the New Year,  while we may face obstacles, as JRR Tolkien beautifully wrote in The Hobbit, inspired by the enchanting Worcestershire landscape: “The road goes ever on and on.”

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas filled with joy and the promise of positive new beginnings!

Mark Garnier,

Wyre Forest MP
