A NEW short film exploring the legacy of Rik Mayall in his former hometown of Droitwich Spa is to be premiered at one of his old haunts soon.
Rik Mayall, he was one of ours you know! will be shown free of charge at The Old Cock Inn in Droitwich on the opening day of the inaugural Rik Mayall Comedy Festival on Saturday, May 31.
The pub on Friar Street is opposite The Norbury Theatre, which is hosting many of the showcase festival events and the theatre where Rik’s family were heavily involved for many years.
Rik himself first trod the boards at the Norbury and is known to have enjoyed a pint at The Old Cock Inn.
The new film features thoughts and images of local people, including old school friends as well as people who never met him but were simply touched or inspired by his work.
It was put together by the music and storytelling collective Harp and a Monkey in collaboration with Droitwich Arts Network and local arts provider Live and Local.
Martin Purdy, of Harp and a Monkey, said: “It is a wonderful thing when communities come together to make an honest and creative statement, but it needs people to take a leap of faith to get involved.
“The success of this project was down to just how willing the people of Droitwich were to embrace it, with more than 50 individuals and organisations doing just that.”
The event will take place from 1.30pm to 5.30pm at The Old Cock Inn. Advance tickets do not need booking for the premieres.
Rhys Jones, chairman of Droitwich Arts Network, added: “The film is a thoughtful and impressionistic reflection on Rik’s time in Droitwich. We are really looking forward to being able to share it.
Prior to the showings of the ten-minute long film there will be screenings at 1pm and 5pm of another short film, ‘This Side of the Afterlife’, which was narrated by Rik. Entry is FREE for all of the screenings.
Following the premiere of the new Droitwich-based film, it will be shown on a loop in the window of the town library throughout the festival.
The film can also be watched on social media and YouTube.
