Service to take place at Cleobury Mortimer's St Mary's Church to commemorate 80th anniversary of VJ Day

Kidderminster Editorial 22nd Jul, 2025

THE CLEOBURY Mortimer branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) will hold a service to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, writes Alexander Shingler.

August 15 this year marks Allied victory over Japan and the end the Second World War.

Cleobury Mortimer RBL wants the VJ (Victory in Japan) milestone to receive as much recognition as the often better-known VE (Victory in Europe) Day on its 80th anniversary.

Celebrations will begin with a short service at the war memorial beside St Mary’s Church at 6.30pm, conducted by the Rector, Rev Ashley Buck.

Local organisations will then assemble with the public in Talbot Yard, forming an RBL-led procession which will journey via Love Lane to the town’s Sports Field.

The procession will be headed by Royal British Legion members,

Branch chairman, Paul Serrell-Cooke, will declare the Exhortation and the bugler will sound the Last Post.

After a two-minute silence, the beacon will then be lit.

Anyone wanting to become a member of the branch should call 01299 270110 to find out more.
