Severn Valley Railway to run its first ever 'Relaxed Santa Train' for all children to enjoy

Kidderminster Editorial 29th Sep, 2024

THE SEVERN Valley Railway is introducing a first-ever ‘relaxed’ version of its Santa Trains in the run-up to Christmas this year, with the aim of making the popular experience accessible to even more people.

The Relaxed Santa Train runs at 10am on December 8 from Kidderminster Town station and its careful design promises all the fun of the traditional version, whilst a number of changes make it a more gentle experience.

Lewis Maddox, the SVR’s visitor engagement manager said: “We know that some children can find railways and pantomimes a bit overwhelming.

“The loud noises, flashing lights and generally busy atmosphere don’t work for everyone. So, we’ve dialed things down for the Relaxed Santa Trains, with lower sound levels, reduced seating capacity and the auditorium lights left on.

“There’s lots of information on our website, describing exactly how the experience will unfold, as we know that this can really help many people get the most out of things, with no unexpected surprises.

“And, we’re sending photos of the panto cast members in advance, so parents can talk through the characters with their children.’

After visiting the winter wonderland on Kidderminster station concourse, family groups take their seats in a private compartment.

“The steam-hauled train travels to Arley where passengers disembark for the panto show.”

Each child will receive a gift on the return journey and the experience lasts two-and-a-half hours

Lewis added: “There’s already been a big demand for tickets.

“This shows us there’s a real appetite for what we’re doing.

“We want to make sure everyone can enjoy the experience of heritage rail, especially in the festive season, and we will look at adding a further date if needed.”
