The flowers’ association with conflict and loss came about because of the connections to the First World War and the iconic poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCrae. Poppies thrived and grew on the battlefields of Ypres and led to them being synonymous with as a peaceful future following war.

The fields in Cookley, off the A449 between Kidderminster and Stourton, have grown poppies for years, leading to it becoming a magnet for photographers and nature enthusiasts from across the region.

People who visit the Cookley’s poppy fields are urged to stay on the paths and not pick the flowers so they can remain there for everyone to enjoy them.

This month was chosen as, along with two bank holidays, the days get longer and it is a great time to get out, exercise and take in some fresh air.

Walking is proven to improve cardiovascular fitness and boost mental health, reducing stress and providing an opportunity for mindfulness.

And, with so much beautiful countryside, parks and other green areas in the Wyre Forest, people do not have to travel far to indulge in this free form of exercise.

As well as posting its own images, the council wants to see residents’ pictures of their walks in the district. Visit the poppy post on the council’s Facebook page facebook.com/WyreForest to submit pictures.
