A SOCIAL day centre in Stourport held an open day in celebration of VE Day, writes Phoebe Mitchell.
The event at the Elizabeth Mills Centre, based in Sion Gardens, featured coffee, cake and even Spam sandwiches for those who wanted to reminisce about the wartime era.
The event proved a very successful event that was enjoyed by all.
The day centre, which is planning more events, wants to raise awareness of the meals and more it offers to the over-50s.
The centre has provided hot meals for years and currently supplies a two-course meal costing £6 for over-55s on three days-a-week – Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Meals are served between midday and 1pm and, with it being a popular service, booking is encouraged by contacting the centre.
Since 1969 – when it was known as the Stourport on Severn Social Day Centre – the venue has been preventing social exclusion among older people and helping address health issues.
Its name was changed in 2010 to recognise a local councillor who served for many years and was a former mayor of Stourport.
The land and building is currently owned by Stourport Town Council but the charity is run by a board of independent trustees who continue the tradition of enhancing wellbeing and promoting good health of the centre’s attendees and residents in the surrounding area.
The trustees are extremely glad the day centre continues to be valued by all who visit and they want more people to be aware of it and the services it offers.
The staff are aiming to set up free events where possible so they can bring more people through the doors.
