STUDENTS from a Kidderminster school have more than doubled their target after raising funds for homeless children in Delhi they will be visiting.

The pupils in year 10 at Baxter College will work with their Indian peers when they spend 10 days on a school exchange to Delhi next month.

The trip has been organised in conjunction with the Salaam Baalak Trust and will give the young people the chance to explore the culture of India.

As part of the fundraising, pupils participated in a 24-hour static cycle marathon, raising £1,000 – double their £500 target for the trust which supports homeless and vulnerable children.

The trip has been mainly funded by the Government’s Turing Scheme, with each student contributing £200 towards the cost.

They have also received sponsorship from sustainable operational excellence coaching company Unleash and Engage, which has funded T-shirts, caps, water bottles and backpacks for the students.

Deputy headteacher Tim Waites, one of three staff accompanying them on the trip, said: “This group of students will work with children supported by the trust, making a real difference to their lives.

“They will also have the opportunity to experience India and visit incredible places including the Taj Mahal.

“It is set to be a life-changing expedition and more than anything else, they want to give as much as they can to the trust.

“Their hard work is testament to that.”

The students set off on April 2 but there is still time to support their fundraising by donating to their JustGiving page.
