Worcestershire NHS staff set to cycle huge distance for UK stroke charity

Kidderminster Editorial 9th May, 2025

WORCESTERSHIRE NHS stroke support staff are set to cycle 240 miles to raise money for the UK’s Stroke Association, writes Alexander Shingler.

The team of cyclists, made up of nurses, therapists and doctors from two NHS trusts, as well as stroke survivors and charity volunteers will be riding 240 miles on static bikes. The distance travelled represents the number of people who wake up daily with the life changing impact of a stroke.

Sarah Hudson, Integrated Services Lead for Stroke at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, who has served as lead for this initiative, said: “We work very closely with people supported by the Stroke Association and wanted to do something to give back.

“The charity not only provides specialist support to people impacted by a stroke, but funds life saving research.”

Teams will set up at Redditch’s Abbey Stadium from 07:30 to 19:30 on Saturday, May 31. The public is invited to come down to the stadium to cheer cyclists, get their blood pressure and heart rate checked and pick up a healthy and tasty treat from the bake sale. All proceeds go directly to the Stroke Association.

High blood pressure has been identified by the Stroke Association as the largest single risk factor for a stroke, discovery and management is thought to significantly reduce an individual’s stroke risk.

The stroke team wishes to thank Abbey Stadium, Stroke Association volunteers, and participating stroke survivors for making the event possible.
