Young volunteers urged to support Worcestershire's Summer Reading Challenge

Sonny Rackham 17th May, 2025

LIBRARIES in Worcestershire are calling for volunteers to support this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Those aged between 13 and 24 who are passionate about books and working with children are encouraged to get involved.

Involvement can also help you gain skills for life and to add to your CV.

Martha Kings, who volunteered in 2023 and now works as a customer advisor in Droitwich Library said:

“Volunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

“It helped me build skills, meet amazing people, and discover just how much I enjoy supporting others.

“That journey led me to my current role as a customer advisor at Droitwich Library, where I get to help people every day.”

Volunteers will play a key role encouraging children to read for pleasure, helping them choose books, tracking their progress, and supporting fun library activities throughout the summer.

Training and guidance will be given to help volunteers support children with their reading challenges, support library activities and events and build confidence and new friends.

Hannah Perrott, Assistant Director for Communities at Worcestershire County Council added: “Volunteering is a fantastic way for young people to gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, and build their confidence.

“It’s a great opportunity to try something new, whether you’re looking for a career in education, library services, or just want to make a positive impact in your community. Volunteering can open doors to new opportunities, personal growth, and a stronger sense of community.”

Volunteering can count towards schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

In 2024, 149 young volunteers gave over 2,000 hours of their time to support the challenge, six even used their experience towards their DofE accreditation.
