STOURPORT Swifts began the new season with a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Hanley Town on the opening day of the campaign.

An early goal from Jack Van Der Laan condemned Swifts to defeat at Potteries Park.

The result means Stourport sit 13th in the Midland Football League Premier Division table.

Hanley went close early on as Jake Twyford’s free-kick from 25-yards out hit the crossbar.

And the home side took the lead on six minutes when Van Der Laan raced through and lobbed the ball over Swifts goalkeeper Tom Hayward.

Hayward then denied Eden Bailey before Leslie Omorodion saw his effort blocked at the other end.

Swifts went close later in the first half as Jim Hanson shot narrowly wide from 20-yards out.

Henley goalkeeper Mike Shorthouse then tipped Omorodion’s dipping cross over the crossbar at full stretch.

The visitors searched for a leveller after the break as substitute Leo Gouveia carved out the best chance but saw his effort saved by Shorthouse.
