UNCERTAINTY surrounds the future of a centuries-old pub near Bewdley after those running the venue announced it has closed following weeks of speculation.

The Duke William in Callow Hill confirmed the news in a brief statement on social media, during which the landlord said they were unsure what would happen to the pub.

The statement read: “As most of you may now know, the pub is now closed.

“We are unsure what is happening to the pub, but we just wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported The Duke William.”

The pub is currently listed on Google as ‘temporarily closed.’

Speculation of the closure grew on May 19 when the ‘Whole Moo World’ vending machine, which allows people to buy fresh milk, announced it would be moving its serving out of the Duke

William pub due to the venue’s imminent closure.’

Whole Moo World said it would be looking to move the vending machine to a new Bewdley location, but it has since confirmed it has moved to The Blount Arms in Cleobury Mortimer.

The Duke William dates back to the 19th century, and it was originally known as the Lord Nelson Inn before being renamed.

Saddened customers have taken to social media reacting to the pub’s closure.

One said: “I’m going to miss this pub as my grandad used to take me there when I was three years old, and when I was in my thirties.”

Others described it as a lovely, welcoming pub with a friendly atmosphere.
