A YARN-bombing scheme has brought colour, creativity and community spirit to Stourport Basin.
The Stourport Community Crochet Project returns after 143 people attended a series of twice-weekly workshops.
An impressive 6.5metre crochet banner framed with intricate crocheted chains has been created. It was inspired by the town’s rich industrial heritage.
The display celebrates Stourport’s canal history with a flotilla of horse-drawn barges. There are also traditional tasselled carpets, vinegar bottles and a beautifully crafted replica of the iconic Stourport Clock Tower.
And there was more creativity through rolls of brightly coloured crocheted triangles and mesmerising wind spinners which now hang from the trees along Mart Lane.
It has transformed the area into a vibrant celebration of community art and local heritage.
The project welcomed people of all ages and abilities, bringing together complete beginners, experienced crocheters and everyone in between.
And it was more than just a craft project – the workshops created opportunities for people to learn new skills, share stories, build friendships and celebrate Stourport’s unique history through creativity.
Ellie Hooper, the artist behind the project said: “This is about so much more than crochet.
“It brings people together, celebrates our local heritage and creates something everyone can enjoy.
“Every stitch represents the time, enthusiasm and generosity of our wonderful volunteers and participants.”
Visitors to Stourport Basin are now being urged to explore the colourful displays and experience how community creativity has helped brighten this historic waterside location.
The Stourport Community Crochet Project has been funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
