TOWN harpist Laima Kasatkina is bringing ‘the beat’ to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge during an event at Kidderminster Library, writes Jacob Scandrett.
The Reading Agency, in partnership with local libraries, alongside Universal Music Group UK, pick a theme for each year’s Summer Reading Challenge and, this year, have selected ‘Read to the Beat’.
This Summer Reading challenge will be running at Kiderminster Library from July 4 to September 12.
Laima will be taking along two baby harps to a free session at Kidderminster Library between 10.30am and 11am on Wednesday, July 22.
It is hoped the chosen theme will inspire young readers to explore the connection between stories and song, discovering how reading and music can ignite a creative flare.
The chosen story will be read by one of the library staff with harps being played throughout.
During the session, there will also be the opportunity for children to have a go at playing some simple sounds on the harp during.
Children can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge for free by signing up at their local library.

If it goes well, Laima is hoping to return to Kidderminster Library with her harp in August.
