A FUNERAL director from Kidderminster has written a book to help children when a loved one dies.
Kate Sprohrer from Attwood Funerals created ‘Granny’s Real Fun’ after speaking to people who remembered as children feeling excluded from a parent’s or grandparent’s funeral when they died.
Growing up Kate’s father was a Church of England priest which meant she cannot remember not knowing about funerals, weddings and Christenings.
She said: “My playground was a graveyard and it was funerals which fascinated me the most.”
Kate, who trained as a bereavement worker many years ago, added she had officiated at many funerals – sometimes when children were welcome and some when they were not.
For many of them who were not involved, this meant they had never been able to properly grieve. Kate wanted to change all that with the book.
She said: “I thought I should write a book to show how children need to be a part of funerals and how healing they could be when done well.”
The book centres on the death of a much-loved granny. The grandchildren know more than the adults about what granny wants for her send off.
The story is about the bonds and wisdom between children and their grandparents.
