'School visits, Carnival, Armed Forces Day and more' - Mayor of Bewdley's lastest column

The Mayor of Bewdley, Coun Sharon Harvey, writes for the Standard.

I HAVE now been in my role as Mayor of Bewdley for the last eight weeks – already a significant part of a role that usually lasts just 12 months.

It is a very busy position, which I balance alongside running a developing dementia charity.

I do not do this alone – I am supported by a council support officer (Marta) and am fortunate to have the outstanding backing of our Town Clerk, fellow councillors and friends. This fantastic group of volunteers help organise the charity events.

My weekly diary is carefully planned and usually includes council meetings, visits requested by local organisations, schools, churches and residents, as well as public events I am expected to attend.

Inevitably, unexpected issues arise and there is always background work to complete.

I always make time for family and friends, but spare moments are limited.

Many late nights are spent reading lengthy reports, writing speeches and reflecting on how best to fulfil my role. Am I achieving what I set out to do?

Recently, I have visited two schools to present awards, delivered several speeches, held a peaceful and fitting Armed Forces event and attended the 100th Bewdley Carnival.

As someone who loves church buildings, I also greatly enjoyed ceremonies at Worcester Cathedral and St Mary’s and All Saints Church in Kidderminster.

Every event is special, but I often find myself reflecting on the thoughtful questions asked by our young schoolchildren.

It is always an honour to think that some of them may one day become councillors – or even Mayors – themselves. We all share responsibility for their future.

Please remember my charities are – Bewdley Dementia Support Group, St Georges Hall, Bewdley, Pets as Therapy and Wyre Horseways.

Take a look at these, online and read a bit more about them.

Stay safe, cool and be kind to each other.
