Swift Friends flying high after successful walk around Bewdley

AROUND 30 people turned out for a walk around Bewdley to discover more about the local swift population.

The event last Friday was organised by local nature lover Linda Iles in conjunction with Swift Friends Wyre Forest.

It started at the Bewdley Brewery Tap on Lax Lane and was held as part of UK Swift Awareness Week which ran from June 27 to July 5.

During the walk, people also looked out for Swifts and help evaluate population and nest numbers locally.

People could also ask questions to experts from Swift Friends Wyre Forest and Nick PAckham from Worcetershire Wildlife Trust.

They found out about the species and how swifts could be helped, such as incorporating swift bricks and swift boxes.

Swifts travel 6,000 miles or more from sub-Saharan Africa to breed in the UK.

Swift Friends Wyre Forest hopes Bewdley could one day become a sanctuary town for the birds.

Linda said: “We had a really nice evening although the Swifts didn’t turn up in great numbers.

“There were about 15 spotted flying over the river and roofs and we found one definite nest.”

She added there were plans to hold more Swift Walks in the future.
