FOOTBALL - Captain Davis sees red as Kidderminster Harriers held to home draw by lowly Southport

CAPTAIN David Davis saw red as Kidderminster Harriers drew 1-1 at home against struggling Southport, writes Neil Gordon.

A first-half strike from Charlie Cooper cancelled out Tom Moore’s shock opener for the Sandgrounders at Aggborough.

A crowd of 2,637 saw the Reds slip to fifth in National League North table on 53 points, losing fourth place to Radcliffe.

Kidderminster fell behind when Moore pounced at the back post to bury a lethal pass across goal from Malakai McKenzie on 19 minutes.

The Reds were level when Cooper hooked the ball home past George Pickford in the Southport goal at a corner on 33 minutes.

As half-time approached Kidderminster could have fallen further behind, and also taken the lead, during a dramatic end-to-end period.

Firstly, Sonny Hilton spotted Harriers goalkeeper Christian Dibble off his line and shot for goal from the halfway line, forcing Dibble to take evasive action.

At the other end, Joe Foulkes’ ball in struck the crossbar after deflecting off a defender.

After the interval both crossbars were rattled in quick succession when Southport’s Matty Williams headed goalwards from a corner, while George Walker’s cross clipped the woodwork.

Walker could have put Harriers ahead but his backheel went agonisingly wide at the back post after a good move.

Dibble then diverted Danny Lloyd’s fierce drive out for a corner as Southport looked for a winner.

And with 90 minutes nearing, Davis saw red after two yellow cards in quick succession as Harriers dropped points at home for the eighth time this season.

Kidderminster play Marine at Aggborough on Tuesday, February 24. Kick-off is 7.45pm.
