HOCKEY - Stourport Hockey Club's men's first XI suffer defeat in home opener

STOURPORT Hockey Club’s men’s first XI suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in their first home game of the season against St Albans.

The hosts lost by a single goal at the Kingsway in the Midlands Conference League.

The game’s only goal came on nine minutes following a rapid counter attack.

Stourport improved after the break but failed to convert any of four penalty corners.

And captain Andy Cavendish rattled the post late on as Stourport suffered a narrow defeat in their home opener.

Elsewhere, Stourport’s men’s second XI secured their first win of the season in Midlands Division Four West.




Stourport won 4-1 against Finchfield 2nds at the Kingsway despite the visitors taking the lead.

A goal from Barney Wright drew the home side level shortly before half time.


And a brace from Adam Leeke and Phil Baldwin strike secured a deserved win for Stourport.

However, Stourport’s women’s first XI suffered a 4-1 home defeat against St Albans in the Midlands Conference League.

The visitors took a one-goal lead into the break and doubled their advantage from a penalty stroke.

Stourport took off their goalkeeper late on which saw St Albans score two further goals as Sophie Thompson scored a consolation for the home side from a penalty corner.

The women’s second XI claimed a comfortable 4-0 win against Bromsgrove 1sts in Midlands Division One.

Some fine saves from Stourport goalkeeper Fran Walker kept the game scoreless before the visitors eventually broke the deadlock.

And Stourport struck twice more before the break to take a commanding lead into the break.

The visitors completed the scoring through Sophie Tibbets with a reverse stick shot.
