STOURPORT Hockey Club’s men’s team made a winning start to the season with victory against Nottingham University.

The club’s men’s first XI battled to a 2-1 victory against Nottingham 2nds in their opening match of the Midlands Conference division.

Stourport had the game’s first shot as Leo Delves fired narrowly wide.

However, despite departing Stourport goalkeeper Alex Cook making some fine saves, the visitors took the lead with a clever dinked finish.

Stourport improved after the break owing to tactical changes made by the club’s new coach Elliot Foweraker.

However, home captain Andy Cavendish picked a drag flick off the line to prevent Nottingam from extending their lead.

Stourport equalised when Dan Hurley drove down the right and delivered the ball across the circle to Tom Clifford who tapped in from close range.

And the home side completed a late turnaround in the final minute as Callum Stanley smashed a shot into the top of the net.

Elsewhere, Stourport ladies suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Leicester City 1sts in the Midlands Conference league.

After a goalless first half, Leicester broke the deadlock before Holly Smith levelled the game for Stourport with a reverse hit.

However, Leicester reclaimed the lead in the final few minutes to deny Stourport a point.

Elsewhere, Stourport’s women’s second XI concluded their pre-season schedule with a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury.

Stourport led by two goals to one at the break only for Shrewsbury to level the game in the second half.
