3,000 new trees to be planted at Kidderminster's Hurcott Pools and Wood after Storm Darragh damage

Kidderminster Editorial 31st Oct, 2025

MORE than 3,000 native broad-leaved trees are set to be planted at Hurcott Pools and Wood in Kidderminster after it sustained extensive storm damage, writes Taneesha Arora.

A lot of destruction was caused by Storm Darragh in December last year and a £4,145.84 grant has been awarded to restore and improve the woodland.

Hurcott Pools and Wood is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSS).

However, after the storm, large areas of the woodland were left unsafe and there was no choice but to close it to the public.

The trees are set to be replanted by Wyre Forest District Council.

The Tree Council and Network Rail’s Community Tree Planting Fund have kindly provided the funding, which will cover the purchasing of trees, site preparation and equipment for volunteers.

Local residents, groups and volunteers will be invited to take part in restoring the woodland in the coming weeks, through community tree planting sessions.

A total of 400metres of mixed native hedgerow will be created along the northern boundary of the site, next to the neighbouring farm as well.

Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, arts and community safety, Coun Ian Hardiman, said: “Hurcott Pools and Wood is a much-loved walking spot for our community.

“The damage caused by Storm Darragh created large open spaces in the reserve, but this grant gives us the opportunity to restore and enhance the woodland.

“We’re excited to work with local volunteers to bring new life to the area.”

Visit the Wyre Forest Rangers Facebook page for details on how to book a tree planting session over the next few weeks.
