A PRESENTATION about the foundation of Stourport will take place on Thursday, February 26.
The talk ‘Before Stourport There Was…’ will be given by David Struckett as part of the Kidderminster Historical Society’s events programme.
The speech will be given after the group’s AGM which takes place at 2.30pm in The Old Museum of Carpet Building, Stour Vale Mill, Green Street, Kidderminster.
David moved to Stourport in 2025 after a lifetime interest in the River Severn and has been involved in boating and historical activities of all sorts, both here and elsewhere.
As a retired engineer and lecturer he is interested in understanding the workings of both the natural landscape for work and trade and the remarkable achievements of ancestors to create transport systems within it.
Stourport was started because of the immediate success of Brindley’s canal and basins on existing trade routes which connect the trades of Birmingham, the Black Country and surroundings to the west of our country – from Shrewsbury down to Gloucester and the estuary.
Prior to that was a river trade which had existed for centuries on what was called ‘The King’s Highway’ to the sea.
Admission to the AGM and talk is free for members with a small charge for visitors who are always welcome.
Places must be booked in advance to ensure a seat.
