Bewdley Chess Club looking for players to join their friendly Friday games

Tristan Harris 12th Mar, 2026

MEMBERS of Bewdley Chess Club are looking for more people to come and join them during their weekly sessions.

The social group meets from 11am to 2pm every Friday lunchtime at St Anne’s Church, Load Street.

Chess players of all levels are welcome and tea and coffee is available in the volunteer-run cafe for a small donation.

John Wrench from the club said: “We would love to see more people pop into our Chess Club for a friendly game.

“St Anne’s Church has a pleasant atmosphere and they also hosts other donation-based activities such as concerts and jigsaw puzzle mornings.”

The group is always working to raise the profile of chess in the town and the Bewdley club also holds competitions.

Before the pandemic struck, the club held a large annual charity chess tournament which was aimed at getting people to participate who did not usually take part in those types of competitions.

People travelled from afar afield as a 30-mile radius to take part.

At that time, the club had aspirations of making Bewdley one of the more chess-friendly towns with a chess cafe culture similar to those seen on the continent.

Members supplied pubs, cafes and other public buildings with chess boards and sets which would be free for people to use as and when they wanted.
